Ministries

We welcome you to Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and invite you to get involved! We have many types of ministries available: administrative, spiritual, youth, outreach, and many more. The ministries of the Church help us fulfill our mission.

Our Ministries

Stewardship

Stewardship is the meaningful use of our God-given time, talents, and treasures. Christian stewards serve God out of love and gratitude, acknowledging that everything we have belongs to Him. We come into this world with nothing, and we leave with nothing. God gives us temporary custody of material wealth and talents, which we must use responsibly, always remembering the words we hear repeatedly during the Liturgy:

“Let us commit our whole life to Christ our God.”

Philoptochos

“Friend of the Poor”

This women’s group has been historically the backbone of philanthropic activity throughout the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in America. Besides providing its members with a host of enjoyable social activities each year, Philoptohos gives away thousands of dollars to worthy charities and individuals, both nationally and internationally. All women of our Church are highly encouraged to consider membership in this vital group.

Bible Study

Bible study is the study of the Bible by ordinary people as a personal spiritual practice or discipline. The practice of studying the Bible personally at home and with others goes back to the earliest days of the Christian faith and has been kept alive in the Orthodox Church through the most horrific persecutions in history.

The great Saint, teacher, and preacher, John Chrysostom, had many instructions for his flock on the reading of Scripture, and for those who did not read the Bible, he had this to say;

“This is the cause of all evils, the not knowing the Scriptures.”

(Hom. IX  On Colossians)

Bible study in this sense is distinct from biblical studies, which is a formal academic discipline.

Church School

The purpose of Church School is to teach our children how to live their Orthodox faith. By teaching them about the life of Christ, we give them the foundation to live Christian lives, to go out into the world and share their faith and do good works. We encourage our children not only to learn about our faith in the classroom but in their homes as well.

Our Church School Program welcomes children as young as 5 years old and offers classes and educational opportunities from Kindergarten through high school.

GOYA

Greek Orthodox Youth of America

The Greek Orthodox Youth of America, or GOYA, is a ministry for young people ages 13-18 that focuses on the orientation and implementation of the Orthodox Christian Faith, Tradition, and Life. The four pillars of GOYA are Worship, Witness, Service, and Fellowship. Our Goyans have worked hard to make the life of the church the center of their life. If you are interested in your children joining our GOYA, please fill out the contact form in the CONTACT page.
